Cheers, I guestimate months rather than weeks, but I enjoy the whole process from the ideas stage (now) to a working protype.

This sounds like a really interesting project, I'll be following this thread. Have you looked at other 1/5 scale 4x4 cars to see if there are transmission parts you could use?

I've owned and (attempted) to race an MCD, nothing of use there for belt/chain drive, but some of the gears would suit a shaft drive system. But I won't use MCD parts on principle, long story :boxed:

The Redcat and Krypton, have a good layout, and that all important center diff. The FG system works but the belt is too buried to make quick repairs viable.

The parts I use will be decided by function, price and availability, and RC parts ain't cheap.

I think I would go for a shaft drive system for this, use an MCD center box driven from the clutch to a front diff, you could adapt front drive axles with different bearings and keep the complete HPI front end, just a thought.

I agree that shaft drives are the best option in engineering terms, but I can't afford to source parts for R&D purposes, plus I haven't got access to a lathe or mill to make bespoke parts such as bearing carriers.

This is going to be a conversion using only Baja parts, and brackets etc that can be made using a dremel and basic hand tools, and done in my flat.

Unless off course anyone has ony old diff mounts etc, (I'll pay P&P) or a workshop I can borrow for a week or two !!

if you wanna have 4wd that still keeps everything else we love about the baja how about this?

from what ive seen of conversions what you end up with by the time you get it to work isn't a baja i'm afraid

No thanks, it's a conversion using HPI parts I want to do, not buy or build a different car. As for the Hydrostatic drive linked to, an interesting idea, but again I can't afford to buy the components for R&D purposes, having owned a HT1 I know Hoermann stuff is well designed amd good quality.

This thread has given me some ideas http://www.hpibajaforum.com/forum/sh...684#post661684

If the first prototype shows up fundamental problems such as weight distribution, I'll think again.

hi sonic, thanks for the friend request, cheers mate. at the moment its allways dark when i get to go near the bajas so just keep on building, running out of tubing soon, got to get another load, never any time to run them, which is handy , less repairs, hopfully have the parts for this one back from the machine shop soon and bolt it together, see if my idea works

I'm trying to get my head round this mod, as you know a love a bit of fabrication and building a "working" 4x4 baja is a fun project, BUT! why are you guys gagging to spend all this money converting a purpose built 2 wheel drive buggy in to a 4 wheel drive, the baja5b has too longer wheel base for a 4x4.

Go buy an FTX with the money and then you have two cars.
    If you're under 18 DON'T watch. can't beat new rubber! Les'be friends
